Gee Gee Secondover ready to prove class

- PETER STAPLES

TRAINER Leon Wells predicted last season Gee Gee Secondover would develop into a top threeyear-old and in Launceston tonight the gelding has the chance to live up to those expectations.

Gee Gee Secondover only won one race last season from five starts, but he was placed second four times and three of those efforts were behind Tasmanian two-year-old of the year Mystic Journey.

Wells has presented the son of Wordsmith to the races twice for two impressive wins this time in and he is hoping the gelding can register the hat-trick tonight.

His first win this season was in a class one handicap (1200m) against older and more experienced rivals but he treated them with contempt, scoring by almost four lengths with Craig Newitt aboard.

He followed up with an effortless win in the Tony Carrick Vase over 1100m in Hobart three weeks ago, albeit in a three-horse race.

“The horse has done everything I’ve asked of him this preparation and even though it was only a threehorse race last start, he had to be ridden out of his comfort zone to win,” Wells said.

“His first-up win showed how much he has grown in maturity and while this upcoming race is full of talented three-year-olds, I expect my horse to be very hard to beat.

“He’s drawn an awkward gate [seven] in a field of nine but he probably has enough early speed to allow Craig [Newitt] to secure a handy spot in the first half of the field. There’s a few real good chan- ces in the race so my bloke will have to be at the top of his game to win.”

The Scott Brunton-trained The Inevitable was impressive in winning a 3YO maiden in Launceston in late September after which he was sent for a short break.

Last start the son of Dundeel de- feated A Tad More and Buzzered and they have since been very competitive in maiden grade.

Also in the mix is the Tegan Keys-trained Ravage, which showed great courage two weeks ago in Launceston to lead and fight off all challenges in a maiden over 1200m.
