Tumney takes Country crown

LUKE Tumney won the A Grade Southern Country Champion of Champions event at North West Bay Golf Club last Sunday.

The local member carded a four-over-par 76 to beat nearest rival Peter O’Keefe from Iron Pot in second with a seven-over-par 79.

The B Grade championsh­ip went to local member Ben Carrick with an eight-over-par round of 80, six strokes in front of Graeme Wright of Llanherne. New Town Bay Golf Club’s Luke Johnston collected the C Grade prize with a round of 87, 15 strokes ahead of Bothwell’s David Patmore on 102.

North West Bay Golf Club again tasted success through Jeff Rogers who picked up the senior division with a five-over-par 77. LAUNCESTON Golf Club’s Greg Longmore won the Tamar Valley Championsh­ip crown last weekend at Greens Beach.

The 33-year-old defeated Wynyard Golf Club’s Craig Hancock on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Wynyard Golf Club’s Jack Lakin took out the junior championsh­ip on 10-over-par, two strokes ahead of Prospect Vale Golf Club’s Ronan Filgate on 12-over. ROYAL Hobart Golf Club’s Simon Hawkes and Mathew Goggin were in action last week in the $1.5 million Australian PGA Championsh­ip on the Gold Coast.

Goggin the best performed of the Tasmanian touring profession­als with rounds of 68, 72, 71 and 74 to finish in a tie for 19th at Royal Pines Resort. The 44-year-old carded nine birdies and six bogeys on his way to a threeunder-par total of 285.

Hawkes also made the cut for the weekend rounds and finished in a tie for 56th on three-over after carding 70, 73, 72 and 75.

Queensland’s Cameron Smith won the Australian PGA Championsh­ip by two strokes at 16-under from Victoria’s Marc Leishman after carding 70, 65, 67 and 70.
