Sorell find joy on the road to Brighton

SORELL travelled to Brighton on Thursday and came away with a six-shot win in Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Division One.

Faye Gardner set up the win for Sorell with an eightshot win over Val Lukasec. Gardner won the first seven ends to jump out to an 11-shot lead, but Lukasec reduced the margin to five shots at the lunch break. Gardner finished strongly to win by eight shots.

Julie Pursell defeated Sue Grant by two shots. Brighton’s Judy Williams finished four shots in front of Janet Cowen.

Sandy Bay scored a 19-shot win over Rosny Park. Laura Best led by 18 shots over Ailsa Milburn by the 13th end before a late resurgence from Milburn cut back the winning margin to nine shots.

Rosny Park’s Gaylene Ridgway scored regularly before the break against Peri Buckley, opening up a nineshot lead. But Buckley hit back by winning all but one of the remaining eight ends to win by seven shots. Sonia Martyn was in top form for Yvonne Buckley, who defeated Judy Sherrin by three shots.

Kingboroug­h was at home to Dover RSL, with the game being played indoors on the synthetic green. Kingboroug­h sauntered to a 36-shot win.

Vicki Bannister led Sheryl Phillips by just two shots after six ends but scored 19 shots on the next six ends to race away to a 20-shot lead after 13 ends and eventually won by 19 shots. Phillips won six of the seven final ends but Bannister still won by 19 shots. Greta Murray played a thrilling draw with Sharon Delaney.

Buckingham was upset by bottom side Glenorchy Rodman, which scored its first win of the season with a 22shot victory. Trudy Davis stormed away after the break, winning the last eight ends to defeat Jeanette Lane by 20 shots. Diane Ayton had the upper hand against Janet Rutherford for most of the day before a late charge from Rutherford reduced the winning margin to three shots. Buckingham’s June Guy beat Pat McCann by one shot on the final end of the day.

Howrah scored a 33-shot win over Claremont. Rosie Geeves convincing­ly defeated Gaye Coleman by 25 shots and Charon Foster beat Maree Morgan by 10.

Claremont’s Joy Voss had a tight game against Sandra Hawksley. Scores were level going into the final end, which Voss won by two shots earning two points for Claremont.
