Calm before storm, literally

- JAMES KITTO

YOU might not want to swap your umbrella for summer beachwear just yet, as the Bureau of Meteorology advises Tasmanians to prepare for some “nasty” wet weather conditions later in the week.

The bureau expects conditions around Hobart to remain warm and dry today before a hot day tomorrow.

But Thursday could be the first of four wet days in a row for the state’s capital, with showers predicted through to Sunday.

Bureau forecaster Tim Bolden said wet weather was expected to bombard most parts of the state from Thursday.

“We’re in for a wet few days after Wednesday, with a low pressure system forming over Victoria expecting to extend to Tasmania bringing possible heavy rainfall,” he said.

“It’s worth emphasising that it could be quite nasty, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty around it this early in the week.”

Mr Bolden said a string of rainy days in December wasn’t unusual. “We see wet weather events like this at the start of summer every three to four years in Hobart,” he said.

“Maximum temperatures will remain quite high and minimum temperatures are forecast well above average for this time of year so it will be quite hot and humid.”

Today is forecast to be sunny and 22C and tomorrow 28C before rain on Thursday.
