Your say on our future

- HELEN KEMPTON

MERILYN Thurlby says she is not worried about much in life – mainly because Tasmania is still a good place to live.

But the Burnie resident has some concerns for the state’s future, including expanding fish farming and that Tasmania is not as progressive as she thinks it could be.

The Mercury annual reader survey is called Future Tassie Survey this year.

Last year the newspaper’s Tassie 2020 online survey attracted more than 800 responses.

All Tasmanians are invited to log in and complete the survey and express ideas on how the state can achieve its full potential.

Ms Thurlby said the state seemed to be doing well but tourism and industries such as salmon farming could not just expand unchecked.

“I do have concerns about fish farming expanding into North-West waters. What happened with the seal relocations into our fishing waters from fish farms down South was a disgrace.

“If it goes unchecked we will lose some of the most basic parts of why living in Tasmania is great and the natural attributes which bring others to see it,” she said.

The 53-year-old thinks Tasmania should follow the lead of places like Canada and legalise recreational marijuana.

“There are much bigger things for the authorities to worry about.”
