THE Charles Gatty monument in Campbell Town commemorat­ing a world famous aviator is in need of restoratio­n. Gatty, born in Campbell Town in 1903, was classed by Charles Lindbergh as the “Prince of navigators”. Charles Gatty was navigator to Wiley Post in a record-breaking flight around the world in 1931 in Lockheed Vega, Winnie Mae. He devised his ground speed and drift indicator later to serve as the basis of the autopilot in modern aircraft. He served in the RAF during World War II as group captain and director of air transport to the Allied forces.
