Kohli pleased with momentum

- RUSSELL GOULD

INDIAN captain Virat Kohli will turn up the pressure on Australia in Perth, hoping to build on a history making firstup win.

The 31-run victory in Adelaide was the first time India had won the opening Test in Australia. The tourists have never won a series here in eight attempts.

Kohli was frustrated as Australia’s tailenders inched to their fourth-innings target, with edges flying through the slips, past the captain’s angry face. He slammed the ball in to the turf after catching an edge from Pat Cummins deep in to the second session. Kohli said his team would take “nothing for granted” as it headed to Perth. “We’ve never taken a lead in a series against Australia, for us it’s a huge, huge boost and given us the right momentum we needed to play a big series like this,” he said.

“Any Test victory is special … the physical and mental toil and the emotion of it all comes together in a result so it’s a very special feeling. It’s something we are really looking forward to building on.

“But we need to build on this. We can’t be happy with one Test match. We are not going to be satisfied with one Test. Yes, we are happy with this victory, but it’s what we need to build on.”

Kohli said the Adelaide victory would release the shackles on a team that was playing like it had “nothing to lose”. “We have come out here to have fun, play good cricket and be positive in our minds,” he said.

“This time around we can learn quicker from our mistakes, and I think we did in this game, and that’s why we won. We did not take anything for granted.”
