Brad works his Magic

- MATT JONES

BRAD Widdup is confident that Jailbreak and Islands are going to have good careers on the track, and it starts today in the $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m).

The pair both finished down the track in their first trials but have come back different horses after let-ups.

Jailbreak, a $470,000 Magic Millions buy, is a Rubick colt and he edged past Islands, a $400,000 Magic Millions purchase by I Am Invincible filly, in a trial at Hawkesbury on November 26.

It convinced Widdup to give them both a crack at the rich juvenile race.

“I like them both,” Widdop said. “I think they are really nice horses and they were both good in their last trial.

“I wouldn’t be running them in a Magic Millions race first-up if I didn’t like what they were doing.

“They did everything wrong in their early trials but the filly is bomb-proof and the colt, Jailbreak, has been excellent since.

“They have tightened right up since they trialled and I’m looking forward to the race. I’m not saying they will just come out and win but they are progressive types.”

If they run well today they could be headed to the Gold Coast next month for the rich $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) but they will have to get the better of a Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott colt.

“Unite And Conquer is one of the better two-year-olds we’ve seen so it’s not going to be an easy race,” Widdup said.

“I’m sure my two are capable and in time people will know who they are.

“I think people will be surprised by the filly’s price when she walks into the mounting yard.

“The filly will jump and be right there and from the barrier I think the colt will go back and be very strong late.

“If he’s midfield with cover I’d be rapt and the filly should be in the box seat. Jailbreak is untapped so we just don’t know, and the filly should be able to do everything right.”
