Delly lifts in Cavs return

- GILBERT GARDINER

NBA championship-winning Australian Matthew Dellavedova banked a season-high 11 points for Cleveland Cavaliers in yesterday’s 108-92 loss at Milwaukee Bucks.

Dellavedova, who spent three seasons at Cleveland before moving to Milwaukee in July 2016 on a $51 million four-year deal, reopened his Cavs’ account with a signature ‘‘Delly Trey’’ in a promising 16-minute cameo off the bench.

The 28-year-old finished with four field goals, four assists and two rebounds.

“[I just tried] to call the few plays that I know and keep us organised and just try to keep talking to the guys,” Dellavedova told Fox Sports Ohio yesterday.

“Try to string some stops together and I think we did a better job of that in the second half.”

The Boomers stalwart was traded back to Cleveland on Friday after falling out of favour in Milwaukee with a year left to run on his contract.

The gritty guard averaged only 1.7 points, 2.4 assists and 0.8 rebounds playing 8.1 minutes in 12 games for the Bucks this season.

It was a mixed day for Australia’s NBA contingent.

Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons and Buck Thon Maker toasted wins, while Dellavedova and Utah Jazz’s Joe Ingles, and Dante Exum played in losing sides.

Simmons had 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the 76ers’ 116-102 home win against Detroit Pistons.

The NBA Rookie of the Year scored his 400th point of the season during an 11-point first quarter to become the first player this season with at least 400 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists.
