Menzel on sidelines after groin surgery

- ADRIAN WARREN

SYDNEY recruit Dan Menzel will not resume training until February after undergoing groin surgery.

The former Geelong forward had groin issues last season.

He was delisted by the Cats but handed an AFL lifeline by the Swans last month.

The Swans website said 27year-old Menzel had groin surgery last week.

“It’s been well documented that Dan had some issues with his groin this year,” Sydney head of football Charlie Gardiner said.

“So we wanted to get on top of it now rather than it potentially become an issue during next season.

“The medical team identified an opportunity to potentially improve Dan’s output and his durability longer term.

“The surgery was performed last week, which went well. We know Dan is a real professional who will do everything required in his rehab and we’re confident he’ll make a successful return to training in February.”

Menzel played 73 games across nine seasons with Geelong, having his career stalled and interrupted by four knee reconstructions. THE Western Bulldogs and Isabel Huntington are anxiously awaiting scan results amid fears the No.1 AFLW draft pick will need another knee reconstruction.

Huntington ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee in Round 2 of the 2018 AFLW season and has undergone scans on the same knee after a training mishap at the weekend.

The top overall pick at the 2018 draft has also previously undergone a reconstruction on her left knee.

Huntington had recently been given the all clear to return to full contact training.

If she does need a third reconstruction, she will miss the entire 2019 AFLW season that starts in February.
