Thrills and spills for movie buffs
MURDER, action, betrayal and romance in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest will make for a thrilling opening to the Hobart Film Society’s 2019 season on Tuesday.
The 1959 classic was selected in 1995 for preservation in the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
It will open a program of more than 50 important films from all periods and places of cinematic history.
Other US films to feature in the Hobart Film Society’s program include Klute, featuring an Oscar-winning performance from Jane Fonda (1971), family favourite The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland (1939), and The Adventures of Robin Hood with Tasmania’s own Errol Flynn (1938).
Acclaimed Australian films to be presented include The Year of Living Dangerously (1981), starring Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hunt, Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940), featuring with Chips Rafferty, and My Year Without Sex (2009), starring Sacha Horler and Matt Day.
There will be free, weekly members-only screenings at the Philip Smith Theatre, Glebe, on alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays and some Mondays.
Twelve-month memberships, which include discounts at the State, Village and Mona cinemas and the Hobart Bookshop, are $47 each, $74 for a double, or $42 and $67 for concessions.
