Wilson AFL rumour off mark

- MATT LOGUE

AFL interest in Sydney Kings guard Tom Wilson is serious, but he is fully committed to his promising basketball career, according to his agent, Daniel Moldovan.

It was reported by AFL.com that up to six clubs are monitoring the 21-year-old’s future as he chases an NBL championship with the Kings.

The Melbourne-born talent was linked to the AFL in June when he trained at Geelong’s facilities during the off-season.

Wilson rejected reports he was considering a return to Australian rules — a sport he played as a junior.

Despite this, AFL recruiters continue to pursue the rising guard who impressed at the 2013 NAB AFL under-16 championships with Vic Metro.

According to AFL.com, Wilson’s lack of game time at Kings this season as he sits in the pecking order behind a quality roster has prompted recruiters to track his progress in the hope he wants to return to football. However, Wilson’s agent reaffirmed his client’s long-term commitment to basketball.

“Their interest is very legit, but he has no interest in the AFL,” Moldovan said.

Wilson has only received 12 minutes of court time this season in six matches because of strength of the Kings’ squad.

The likes of Jerome Randle, Kevin Lisch and Kyle Adnam are all ahead of him.

Wilson understandably wants to play a bigger role, but he is prepared to be patient and learn from some of the league’s best guards such as Randle and Lisch.

He is hopeful of taking on a greater role next season.
