Daryl’s Horses feature at Cup

- SHAUN McMANUS

THOUSANDS of punters will flock to Elwick Racecourse tomorrow to see The Horses — and watch the Hobart Cup.

Chart- topping Australian musician Daryl Braithwaite, whose hit 1991 song The Horses has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, will be the headline act on the main stage at the cup.

The former Sherbet frontman has played at horse races around the country as a result of the link between the song and racing — even if it is a tenuous connection.

“[It’s] a very thin one, let me tell you,” Braithwaite told the Mercury with a laugh.

“As I think I told them last year at the Cox Plate, I said that this song really had nothing to do with horse racing at all.

“It’s just a very interesting song, I think … and a lot of people still like it, which is great.”

Braithwaite was no one-hit wonder, though, and will play a full set at the Hobart Cup.

“People will have to put up with other songs before we get to The Horses,” he said.

“We’ll do things like Sherbet’s Howzat, and then As The Days Go By, Rise, All I Do, One Summer and Not Too Late, which is a new one, and probably one or two more.”

Gates open at the Hobart Cup at 10am on tomorrow.

Various ticketing options are available, starting from $15. Tickets can be bought online at trchobart.com.au.
