Troops on fire front

- Dee Frances Lenah Valley

CLIMATE is changing, fire seasons are longer and harsher. Governments are faced with ever-increasing costs for firefighting. I suggest that military resources be used. Let’s face it, the outcome of future wars isn’t going to depend on billion dollar submarines or expensive jet fighters. Imagine the firefighting equipment that could be bought with even a small portion of this money. We have 80,000 military personnel but only a small proportion ever see active service and it is always abroad. Could not some of these fit, hardworking troops be trained to save their own land from the destruction of bushfires?
