Control car use

- Tony Dix New Town

WE can go on ad nauseam discussing little bits of this and that to alleviate the congestion problems in Hobart. Voluntary car sharing, new roads, ha! More cycle paths etc, etc. The problem is freedom, uncontrolled use of the motor car. Until we realise that the only way to alleviate the problems is to control car usage we will get nowhere. Congestion charges, odds and evens, two or three to a car, dedicated bus and multiple occupancy lanes, all backed up by penalties for non-compliance. Oh, they all cry, “I would rather sit in traffic with its pollution and frustrations”. Freedom. What a cost. And how about cheaper registration for those prepared to stay off the road between certain hours? Wake up!
