DOUBLE GLORY:

KOOKABURRAS, HOCKEYROOS GRAB THRILLING WINS

- ADAM CLIFFORD

HOCKEYROOS goalkeeper Rachael Lynch has led Australia to a thrilling 3-1 penalty shootout win against Germany to ensure they sit second on the Pro League standings.

Lynch was superb after scores ended 2-2, repelling three of four shots, and further enhancing her already strong credentials for the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Goals to player of the match Sophie Taylor and Grace Stewart had twice given the home side an advantage, only to be cancelled out by two penaltycorner goals from German star Hanna Granitzki. Under the intense pressure from an expectant fan base, Hockeyroos trio Edwina Bone, Brooke Peris and Mariah Williams all converted their shootout attempts before being somewhat overshadowed by Lynch’s heroics.

“I’m pleased with the determination of the girls. We played yesterday, so to come out against a fresh team and win was pleasing because we know they’re a quality team,” Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin said. “The Germans applied a little bit more pressure on us and we can’t afford to let teams get back into it like today.

“Shootouts are something that you have to prepare for. We do plenty of training to prepare for those moments and Rachael is a world-class keeper.”

The Hockeyroos now prepare to face Olympic champion Great Britain in Perth and Gaudoin said he walked away from their week in Tasmania with plenty of positives.

“The weather has been fantastic. It’s a great place to play hockey. The facilities are excellent, and we had a great turnout of spectators, so we’ve really enjoyed it. I’m certainly hoping from the games that we play here that some girls have been inspired to play for the Hockeyroos. We know there’s plenty on the boys’ side, so maybe some more work to be done on the girls’ side.”
