Room for bus route rethink

- BLAIR RICHARDS

THE State Government says it is open to reviewing recent changes to bus services to the Derwent Valley if community angst continues.

Students, workers and families gathered at a packed public meeting in New Norfolk on Monday to discuss transport problems resulting from a recent shake-up of bus services.

The meeting heard the changes had resulted in children being significantly late to schools in Hobart.

Longer, more complicated routes were also frustrating city workers who were revert- ing to their cars in an effort to get to work on time.

The Department of State Growth has acknowledged the issues raised and flagged “further adjustments” if necessary.

“Last week saw some issues in the Derwent Valley, particularly around morning services into Hobart,’’ a spokesman said.

“The department will con- tinue to work with operators and the community to get the new arrangements working more smoothly.

“We are also reviewing passenger numbers over the next few days and will make further changes as needed.

“We recognise the importance of getting bus services right and this is an ongoing job.”

Opposition Leader Rebecca White said the changes were made without consultation and caused “havoc” for Derwent Valley residents.

Ms White said they deserved a better public transport service.
