State skipper grabs North West crown

LAUNCESTON Golf Club member Mitch Van Noord captured the Golf North West Championsh­ips at Ulverstone on the weekend.

The 26-year-old state team captain shot rounds of 70 and 71 to finish the 36-hole event with a three-under-par 141.

Ulverstone Golf Club member Cameron Allen was second with scores of 77 and 70, a three-over total of 147. Wynyard Golf Club’s Brayden Field rounded out the top three on six-over-par with scores of 75 and 75, a total of 150.

The junior championsh­ip was won by Stanley Golf Club’s Jack Lakin on 10-over after rounds of 73 and 81. North West Bay Golf Club junior Oscar Burrell was second with scores of 79 and 77.

Local member Scott Malone won the Senior North West title and Jack Blair from the Prospect Vale Golf Club picked up the colts title. GOLF Tasmania has named its team for the Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches.

Van Noord will captain the eight-man team for the second time in Tasmania during May.

Van Noord’s squad will include Tasmania Golf Club’s Andrew Phillips and Mark Schulze, Royal Hobart’s Paul Read and Ryan Thomas from Prospect Vale.

Former touring profession­als Craig Hancock from Wynyard and Greg Longmore from the Launceston Golf Club are also very strong inclusions.

A new member to the team this year is 18-year-old Royal Hobart Golf Club member Joey Bower. Iron Pot Golf Club member Gary Purdon will manage the team while Tasmania Golf Club Profession­al Nick White is coach.

The Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches are at Tasmania Golf Club from May 7-10. Each state and the Northern Territory play each other over singles match play in a round-robin format, concluding with a final. A RECORD 12-strong rookie squad will have Golf Australia support on the world’s profession­al tours this year.

Golf Australia announced the 2019 rookie squad, with six new additions after a series of encouragin­g performanc­es in recent months. Six of last year’s squad — Brett Coletta, Karis Davidson, Cameron Davis, Hannah Green, Lucas Herbert and Travis Smyth — are back. They are joined by six new players.

The 2018 PGA Tour of Australasi­a Order of Merit winner Jake McLeod and emerging Japan Tour star Anthony Quayle earnt rookie squad positions. There are three new pros who have come through state-based high-performanc­e programs in Min Woo Lee, Zach Murray and Dylan Perry. Golf Australia’s 2019 rookie squad: Robyn Choi (first year), Brett Coletta (third year), Karis Davidson (second year), Cam Davis (third year), Hannah Green (third year), Lucas Herbert (second year), Min Woo Lee (first year), Jake McLeod (first year), Zach Murray (first year), Dylan Perry (first year), Anthony Quayle (first year) and Travis Smyth (second year).
