Support act red hot for big gig

- SHAUN McMANUS

TASMANIAN indie poprocker Maddy Jane was born a decade after the Red Hot Chili Peppers released their first album, and never dreamt that she would one day support the rock legends.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers — who released their self-titled debut record in 1984 — are playing at the Derwent Entertainment Centre tomorrow in what is set to be one of the biggest concerts in Tasmania in recent years.

Jane, 24, who grew up on Bruny Island and is now based in Wollongong, found out she would be supporting the band on Monday.

She said she grew up listen- ing to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and was still getting used to the idea of supporting them.

“This is insane, this is [the] ultimate,” Jane said. “People are saying ‘Wow, it must be a huge dream come true’, and it’s not even that, you can’t dream that kind of thing up.

“Who thinks ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to support the Red Hot Chili Peppers one day’ — no.”

Jane is no stranger to the big stage — she has previously supported the likes of international heavyweight Harry Styles — and said she isn’t feeling too nervous yet.

“The whole aspect of the show part of it, I’m feeling more and more comfortable with, and I’m just really excited at the moment,” she said.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums and won six Grammy Awards. Tomorrow’s show will kick off their first Australian tour in 12 years.
