Remember the days of the old schoolyard

- AMINA McCAULEY

CELEBRATIONS of New Town High School’s centenary year are under way, with 180 people, including old scholars to current school prefects, last night attending a dinner at Government House.

Principal David Kilpatrick said although the centenary year was for reflecting on achievements so far, it was also a year for looking forward.

“Our centenary year is a year of projects based on helping our students achieve in the future,” Mr Kilpatrick said.

One of these projects includes re-establishing the old scholars association to initiate a mentoring program for students, which Mr Kilpatrick believes will help students both past and present to connect.

“It’s going to focus on emotional and mental health,” he said.

Mr Kilpatrick said a key focus of the school was on sustainability, involving both innovation and entrepreneurship.

This year a “sustainability shed” will be established, where the old scholars and the students can work on projects together to help solve environmental challenges.

“As a school we want to be doing stuff for the community, for the betterment of everybody,” Mr Kilpatrick said.

A Hall of Excellence will also be established.

Other events will occur throughout the centenary, including a debate between three Supreme Court judges who are former students and the school debating team.
