NW leads from go to whoa at Longford

THE third and final round of the Junior Statewide Challenge was held on Sunday at the Longford Bowls Club.

Bowls North West was well out in front heading into the final round and hung on to win the title from a fastfinish­ing Bowls South.

The morning games saw triples and pairs contested with South putting in a dominant performanc­e. In the triples South B defeated North A by 19 shots and South A beat North West B by four shots.

In the pairs a clean sweep was completed with South A defeating North West A by four shots and South B beating North B by 20 shots.

The other two results were split between the North and North West with North West winning the triples by seven shots and North winning the pairs by 19 shots

In the afternoon fours, North West got its second win of the day with a 12-shot victory over South. North took the spoils in the fours with a two-shot win over South and a three-shot win over North West. South dominated in the singles defeating North West by 11 shots and had a narrow two-shot win over North. Final ladder: North West 40.5, South 34.5, North 33. INVERMAY’S Rebecca Van Asch has been named in the Bowls Australia Jackaroos team to compete in the 2019 Asia Pacific Championsh­ips to be held on the Gold Coast in June.

Following her gold medal success in the triples and fours at the 2018 Commonweal­th Games on the Gold Coast, Van Asch will skip the triples team and will play as the third in the fours team. CONGRATULA­TIONS to Sandy Bay’s Phil Hobbs who has been appointed state chairman of selectors by Bowls Tasmania, Howrah’s Bill Butler, who has been appointed as the Men’s Southern Over-60s state selector, and Dover RSL’s Rick Ormerod, who has been appointed as a state selector for Bowlers with a Disability. THE ninth Australian Premier League starts next Monday at Naenae Bowling Club in Wellington, New Zealand.

Eight teams, including some of the best local and internatio­nal players in the world, are competing for $100,000 in prizemoney with the winning team receiving $25,000. The competitio­n is being broadcast live on Fox Sports from 4pm-9pm each night from Monday to Thursday.
