Lightning keen to push for top result

- ADAM SMITH

A TOP-TWO spot and home semi-final are already guaranteed for Lindisfarne, but coach Matthew Wilkie has declared the current ladder leaders will still push for a result at the TCA today.

Day one of the Lightning’s clash against North Hobart was abandoned without a ball bowled last Saturday after overnight covers were only put down on the playing strip.

Persistent morning drizzle hit the square, and while it cleared to allow the other three games to start umpires deemed the TCA surface unsafe.

It has left Lindisfarne, which sits five points ahead of Clarence, needing to move the game forward with the Roos hunting an outright victory against New Town.

And while the minor premiership is not the be-alland-end-all for the Lightning, Wilkie said his troops won’t just be going through the motions on the last day of action before finals.

“Playing at home or not playing at home is the biggest advantage, as long as we are playing at home it is as much of an advantage as we can have,” Wilkie said. “We will just be trying to get some points and stay top if we can.

“I think it is an accomplishment to finish top, obviously we will be trying to keep that, but finishing one or two in terms of getting those advantages is the main aim.

“Winning next week is our biggest goal. We lost the semi last year and we set our goals on getting to the grand final this year.

“To give ourselves the best chance of doing that we wanted to finish one or two, so we are pretty happy to have done that.”

Wilkie said he will discuss with Demons skipper Caleb Jewell before the toss to see how the two sides can manufacture an even contest.

In other matches the Roos resume at 1-57 having rolled the Bucks for 113 last week, University finished last week 6-276 against Glenorchy, while Kingborough reached 4-154 against South HobartSandy Bay.
