Fabulous finish makes it Night to remember

- PETER STAPLES

THE smile on driver Sam Gangell’s face said it all after Give me the Night powered home to win the Hobart Signwriter’s Pace over 1609m at Elwick last night.

Gangell allowed Give me the Night to settle last and the eight-year-old was still there as the field sped down the back stretch the last time.

But Gangell knew the leaders had done their share of work and when she called on her charge for the big effort he stormed home to defeat Big Bang Raj and Chasing Cheetahs.

It was the Ben Yole-trained gelding’s second win in three starts, but surprisingly punters allowed him to go around as a $10 outsider.

Yole also hitched up the winner of the opening race, smart filly My Girl Pearl, who made the most of her pole position to lead throughout the race and easily win the Rexel North Hobart Pace over 1609m.

My Girl Pearl was having only her second start in the state, with her first an eyecatching fourth in the Tasmanian Oaks in Hobart last week.

It was a stroll in the park for the former Victorian filly and Yole said she has a very bright future.

“I have a lot of time for this filly and there is no doubt she will win much better races than this,” Yole said after the race.

“I would expect her to go around in the Guineas here next Friday night and then she could be back in Melbourne for a crack at the Breeders Crown.”
