Teen’s giant leap
GRACE Pullen has returned from the National Netball Championships in Brisbane to receive the most exciting news of her short but successful netball journey to date.
The talented 16-year-old shooter has been invited to attend the under-17 Centre of Excellence Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
“It definitely came as quite a surprise I wasn’t expecting it all,” said Pullen, adding “but I’m really excited.”
Pullen is one of 36 athletes from around the country who were selected based on their performance at the national championships and their future potential; and she will be joined by the North’s Hannah Lenthal at the camp. Hannah McDougall from the North-West will attend the under-19 camp with 26 of the country’s best.
Pullen’s talent was clear from an early age. She was in southern representative sides starting in under-11s, and state selection followed. She was named captain of the under-15 team last year.
Pullen debuted in the State League competition this year for St Lukes Health Karana, moving straight into Opens, with the step up excellent for her preparation ahead of nationals.
“It’s very challenging — it’s a good challenge every week playing against the tougher competition. The bigger bodies are much stronger,” Pullen said.
She can’t wait for camp and the opportunities that await.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know and play with the other identified girls and getting the additional coaching,” she said.
Pullen is also in the state underage cricket team and isn’t ready to pick a favourite.
“I’m going to try and juggle both as long as I can and see what opportunities come for both,” said Pullen.
