Y2K teamwork success

ABOUT 25 years ago the world was warned that any computer program that used date routines was in danger of failing with potentially catastrophic results (“Remember Y2K?”, Letters, June 18). Airlines, hospitals, financial institutions, security services and governmental systems across the planet were at risk. This is verifiable fact. Governments and industry around the world spent between $US200 billion and $858 billion, according to various sources, to correct this.

They worked together and shared data and solutions to eliminate, or at least mitigate the impact. If only we could get past the ignorance of myth on climate change and work together again on this even bigger calamity we face.

Feel-good statement?

AS I read “Finally it’s a climate emergency” ( Mercury, June 18), I was rather puzzled why this was thought to be a case for enthusiastic celebration. What does it actually mean? Will it generate more action on climate change by the council, State THANK you again Charles Wooley ( TasWeekend, June 15) for informing us about what is happening in our state. This article was a real eye-opener. We have no idea what is going on. Overseas buyers are making a huge impact on our way of life. Why do we allow so much property to be sold to people who don’t live here. Are we ever going to put up a stop sign? The almighty dollar is alive and well.
