Camilla world champ

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

SHE was not feeling her best, but that did not stop Hobart wonder woman Camilla Fogagnolo from becoming a world champion at the Static Monsters strongman competition on the Gold Coast last weekend.

There was more reason to celebrate after Camilla’s triumph at the muscle-tussle in the under-72.5kg division, with her brother Priscus taking bronze in the under-90kg and their Artgym training partner, Lydia Hantke, winning a masters subcategory.

Static Monsters, which has been running since 2015 and is the biggest strongman event of its kind in the world, comprises of log lift and axle deadlift events.

Competitors get three attempts to lift the log to overhead and three attempts of the deadlift on the axle bar, where the heaviest successful lifts of each event are added together and the total weight decides the winner.

All of the training paid off for Camilla.

“I went in too far underweight and not feeling particularly mint, which became very apparent when I struggled with my first log attempt at 80kg,” she said.

“I got it, but then missed my next two attempts at 85kg.

“That left me in a very difficult position leading into the deadlift.

“My biggest competitor had succeeded with a massive 100kg log national record.

“In a bid to stay 20kg in front of my competition, I opened ‘deads’ on 255kg, then 265kg on my second, which was enough to equal the lead. I secured the win by virtue of being lighter in body weight.

“My third attempt of 272.5kg was unsuccessful. I’m pretty sure that both my deadlift and total were national and possibly world records in my weight class.”

That Priscus claimed third in his event was icing on the cake.

“A podium finish from the guy who was convinced he would place last at this event — so proud,” Camilla said.
