Rockers own up to creating a fine mess

- PATRICK GEE

BYRON BAY surf rockers Skegss are on a road trip and will stop off in Hobart next week as part of their Australian Tour ’19.

When it was released in September, their album, My Own Mess, debuted at No.2 on the ARIA Album Chart, and the band have been riding a wave of success ever since.

Bass player, backing vocalist and lead vocalist on several tracks, Toby Cregan, told Pulse the band members were surprised by the album charting so highly.

“Everything we have ever done

after our first show already exceeded our expectations, so our whole career comes as a pleasant surprise,” he said.

The band made a meteoric rise to prominence in 2014, striking a chord with fans with their debut single L.S.D., which has collected more than 3.5 million views on YouTube.

The single Got On My Skateboard, taken from their 2017 EP Holiday Food, also received widespread acclaim.

They have released several hit singles from their 15-track album, My Own Mess, including Up In The Clouds, Smogged Out and the most recent, Road Trip (sung by Cregan).

“There is a lot of really good bands in Australia right now,” Cregan said, noting that there has been a recent resurgence in Australian garage rock and punk.

“A lot of friends’ bands have been touring a lot the last few years. Most of the bands we started playing with are kind of popping, doing cool shit, so I am not really surprised.”

Catch Skegss at the Uni Bar in Sandy Bay next Friday (July 12), supported by fellow Byron Bay rockers Miniskirt and three-piece rock band Totty, from Wollongong.

Tickets are $56 including a booking fee, and $1 from each ticket sale will go to support Go Foundation and their work creating opportunities for indigenous youth through education.

“Seeing the Aboriginal community thrive is something that is important to us and hopefully our contribution helps a little bit,” Cregan said.
