Don’t spoil it

SIMON Bevilacqua and Charles Wooley are only reiterating what former Premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett is saying, that is, Tasmania is unique, do not spoil it, that is what visitors and tourists come to see and enjoy ( Mercury, July 13). Launceston is under attack similar to Hobart, and will risk losing its heritage status. Credit to former mayors the late Dr Harry Fisher and R.M Green who halted the destruction of the Brisbane St streetscape opposite the City Park. I liken these persons to Mayor Leo Port and builders union secretary Jack Mundey who saved the Rocks area and notable heritage buildings in Sydney.

More like a lounge room

I THINK perhaps some cable car supporters want to enjoy the mountain but not for what it actually is. They want to change it to something that suits them better — more like their lounge room but with a fabulous view where they can duck outside briefly but return asap to a comfy couch and hot drink. However as we’ve seen all this week kunanyi is wild and amazing and shouldn’t be made into something else for the “entertainment” of a few. Let it be and leave it alone. WELL that’s a new way to show gratitude, racing your buffalo to thank them for their hard work all year long. “You have to whip them as much as you can to make them go fast, otherwise you could lose. The more you whip them, the faster they go,” says one of the competitors ( Mercury, July 15). I suppose they enjoy being whipped like racehorses apparently do. What a reward. Thank you kind owner.
