PRIME Minister Scott Morrison prayed for rain at the Hillsong Pentecostal Christian convention in Sydney. This is a man who has also said climate change is a huge threat to Australia and the world, so why does he not pray for the climate to stabilise? Maybe it is because he has all the information available to him to show how humans, largely through continued burning of fossil fuels, are stacking the odds towards more disruptive rainfall patterns and extreme weather. GP Dr Clare Smith hits the nail on the head when she writes that to successfully combat an anxiety, we must identify the threat and make a positive plan. Some may worry that declaring a climate emergency will cause unnecessary anxiety, especially for children. However, I agree with Dr Smith’s assessment that using this direct language encourages us to recognise and prioritise this global problem, so we can work towards its solutions. These solutions will have benefits beyond direct environmental impacts.
