They’re metal as anything

- — PATRICK GEE

AFTER 20 years in the business, Tasmanian death metal band Psycroptic found a second wind when they released their seventh album, As The Kingdom Drowns, last year.

Since the album’s November launch, Psycroptic have toured around Australia, Europe and the US, connecting with broader audiences than ever before.

The band return to Tassie next week for a headline show at Hobart’s new Mona-affiliated nightclub, Altar.

Drummer Dave Haley said it had been a busy but exciting six months for the band since the release of As The Kingdom Drowns.

“It’s probably been received the best out of any of our albums,” he said. “We’ve been going for 20 years now, so it’s still exciting and fun, but when new music is received with such enthusiasm and from new and varied fan bases, it’s cool.

“We are doing something creatively that we’re all super proud of and very happy with, and we really enjoy playing the new songs live.

“It’s made us more focused and we’re stoked to start working again on new material.”

Haley said the songs on the album were catchier and more traditionally structured, which helped them reach new audiences.

After the current string of Australian shows, Psycroptic will return to the US and Europe.

The band expect to film and release new music videos between their shows in Australia.

Haley said he hoped the band could start writing and recording new music in November and December this year between tours.

Psycroptic will be supported by Melbourne’s Blackhelm and Hobart bands Coward Punch and The Absolution Sequence at Altar from 8pm next Friday (August 2). Tickets are $23.50 from oztix.com.au.
