Blazing Blues roll AYC

- RENEE GODFREY

KINGSTON Blues have hit form at the right end of the Premier League season, taking another big scalp in their 33-29 win over AYC.

AYC flew out of the blocks scoring five consecutive goals before Kingston was able to steady with Jennifer Hanlon working hard defensively at keeper to create turnovers.

And a steadier approach in attack for Kingston saw them even the scores, 8-8, at the first break.

AYC was able to take control in the second quarter with Reagan Davie finding great depth in the goal circle and finishing beautifully.

Kingston’s accuracy waned at the other end with Natalie Smedley from AYC on the end of almost every rebound helping her team take a 19-13 lead at halftime.

Karen MacLean returned to the court for Kingston in goals with her impact immediate in steadying the circle.

AYC wing defence Chloe Bennett was working overtime to shut down Kingston speedster Olivia McGow in an attempt to slow Kingston’s entry into the circle. But it was Kingston’s defence end that was relentless with Emily Handley, Emily-Kate Garvey and Hanlon shutting down AYC’s attack end as they powered to a 25-22 lead heading into the last quarter.

Both teams’ defensive efforts in the last were impressive.

But the restricted scoring opportunities meant AYC was unable to close the gap as Kingston held on for the fourgoal win. Handley was player of the match.

Cripps Waratah ran over the top of St LukesHealth Karana to record a 57-43 win, with Cripps defender Zoie Crawford player of the match.
