Cripps left singing Blues

- RENEE GODFREY

KINGSTON Blues have another big scalp after beating ladder leaders Cripps Waratah 36-30 in Wednesday’s Premier League match.

Cripps started the match with excellent defensive work from Zoie Crawford, Hannah Fazackerley and Ellie Grace to shut down Kingston’s attack and create multiple turnovers, but were unable to capitalise.

Kingston’s adjustments took a while but they managed to settle to take a 10-8 lead at the first break.

Jennifer Hanlon entered the match at keeper for Kingston and combined well with Emily-Kate Garvey to shut down the space of Kirra Parson and Sophia Cole in goals. Kingston continued to remain patient in attack to ensure a safe path to goals, with Karen MacLean’s composure in goals settling the rest of the team as Kingston maintained a 20-18 lead at halftime.

A low-scoring third quarter saw both teams create turnovers, but neither could affect the scoreboard as Kingston held a 26-24 lead heading into the final quarter.

Emily Handley continued to contest beautifully in the last creating turnovers as Kingston looked to control the quarter with MacLean finishing well.

Cripps tried to close the gap late in the quarter, but Kingston remained composed to take the six-goal win and prove they are a genuine finals contender.

In the other match AYC had a strong 57-15 win over OHA. With one round to go before finals, Cripps are guaranteed the minor premiership, with next week’s match between AYC and St LukesHealth Karana deciding who finishes second and gets the double chance.
