Red-hot Roos not about to ease off

- ADAM SMITH

CLARENCE coach Jeromey Webberley doesn’t have to look far for the perfect example in imploring his playing group to not take last week’s brilliant TSL victory for granted.

The previously bottomplaced Roos orchestrated arguably the upset of the season when they toppled ladder leader Lauderdale at Blundstone Arena.

It was the third shock result in four weeks, with Tigers bringing down North Launceston for the first time in their history in Round 15 and North Hobart — which was at the time sitting last — downing Launceston in Round 17.

However the Demons were unable to back up their performance last Saturday and Webberley is hoping his playing group doesn’t make the same mistake when they welcome Launceston to Blundstone.

“It [the week] has been good, but the challenge for a young group is they’ve got to back it up two weeks in a row,” Webberley said. “Perfect example and we only have to look at another club in the TSL, North Hobart beat Launceston two weeks ago and then they had a really disappointing performance against the Tigers on the weekend. We don’t have to look any further than those guys. We can talk about it as much as we want but it’s up to the individual and the leaders in the group to make sure we get a consistent effort this week.”

Webberley conceded it was easier said than done in ensuring his players are mentally switched on against the Blues, who are coming off back-to-back defeats.

“I suppose you’ve got to have a discussion about it and you need to do that as early as you can in the week and then you need to make sure the training’s buoyant and they’re not ahead of themselves.

“Maybe in the review you can pick out little bits and pieces where we can give them a bit of a whack, or maybe through training if I suppose they’re a little bit happy with themselves you can go a little bit harder.

“But … it’s got to come down to the individual a little bit. We can educate as much as we like, but you know individuals throughout the team have to take ownership of it.”
