German composer on way

- PENNY McLEOD

LEGENDARY German composer and pianist Nils Frahm will perform in Hobart for the first time as part of a national tour.

The 36-year-old combines classical and electronic music with an array of analog and electric pianos, synthesisers and drum machines to create music that is both beautiful and complex, wild and dark.

Tickets for his Hobart performance at the Odeon Theatre on November 28 will be on sale from Friday.

“Nils has been on our Dark Mofo program wishlist for years so it’s great news that he will be performing here in Hobart at the Odeon as part of his first live performance tour since 2015,” said DarkLab media manager Rebecca Fitzgibbon.

Frahm, known for his improvisational spirit and open discourse with his audience, will be visiting Tasmania as part of a worldwide tour called All Melody to promote his three-part All Encores album series.

His work references the minimalist tradition of classical greats (Steve Reich, Philip Glass), contemporaries (Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi), and the stagecraft of jazz legends (Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk).

“I’m interested in how human beings react in certain situations, and what music does to people’s emotions,” Mr Frahm said in British online music and pop culture magazine, The Quietus. “How we can change people’s attitudes with tones. After I’ve played a good concert, people leave the room happy. This is something we can give back to the world.

“When people feel down and like it’s all going to shit, at least we can give them some music and change their attitude so people don’t think it’s all shit … That’s my religion.”
