Scott on song in Chicago

-

ADAM Scott has made a solid start to the first round of the BWM Championship at Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

The BMW Championship is the second of three events that make up the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

Scott mixed five birdies, an eagle and a two bogeys in a five-under-par 67.

Scott sat two shots behind clubhouse leader Justin Thomas, who equalled the course record at course No.3 at Medinah with a bogey- free 65.

Former world No.1 Scott birdied the first hole before adding an eagle at the par-5 fifth and a birdie at the sixth.

He bogeyed the ninth, but bounced back with two birdies in succession from the 10th.

At the par-5 14th, Scott smashed a 280m drive down the fairway and despite finding a greenside bunker for his second, he got up and down for birdie.

He bogeyed the last but remains well in the mix.

Meanwhile, Scott’s countryman Jason Day, the 2015 BMW champion, was two under-the card with his new caddie David Lutterus on the bag.

Former world No.1 Day split with New Zealand caddie Steve Williams after missing the cut at last week’s Northern Trust event in New Jersey.

Day then summoned close friend and fellow golf pro Lutterus, an Adelaide native, for the BMW.

At one-under was Tiger Woods, who appeared to be free of the back pain that forced him to withdraw from last week’s PGA Tour finals event. Woods won the 1999 and 2006 US PGA Championships at the Medinah.

Rounding out the Australian contingent was Marc Leishman, the 2017 BMW champion, who was even-par at the end of the first round.
