Frustrated Tigers vow to better capitalise

- ADAM SMITH

THE next evolution in the Tigers’ progression to become a regular TSL threat is cashing in when they have control of a contest.

Finals-bound for the first time in their existence, the Tigers failed to make the most of their opportunities last weekend against Glenorchy — a side they are yet to defeat.

Another chance presents itself this afternoon at the Twin Ovals in the Gadomski-Riewoldt Cup clash against Clarence, with coach Trent Baumeler hopeful his players have learned from their mistakes seven days ago.

“Especially when you look at the scoreboard and field position and territory for 2½ quarters, we probably dominated the game,” Baumeler said. “Our conversion wasn’t great, we ended up with more scoring shots and more inside-50s, so we’ve got to win those games and win those moments.

“Every club, every team, their forwards work hard on their goalkicking craft and unfortunately some days it just doesn’t go through.

“We’ll take that from it and improve that and just understand those moments when we are on top and we do have dominance, that we really need to go on with it and that’s that next step for us as a group.

“We want to become one of those top teams that has that ruthless mindset, so that’s what we have to do. The more we’re in those situations, eventually we are going to get over the top and win one of those games.”

The Roos are coming off a disappointing showing themselves, where they were torched by Launceston a week after toppling then-ladder leader Lauderdale.

While impressed with the heat the Blues brought, Clarence coach Jeromey Webberley said it was a great learning tool for his players in their quest for consistency.

“We ran into a really good team, so we can’t take anything away from Launceston, but we were disappointing,” he said.

“I thought our aggression around the ball and our willingness to really want to hunt the opposition wasn’t there on the weekend, which was disappointing after a really good result the week before.”
