Rivals lock horns in crown decider

- DAN THURLEY

THE 2019 Women’s Super League comes to an exciting conclusion this weekend with Olympia Warriors and Hobart Zebras meeting tomorrow afternoon at KGV in what will be the deciding fixture for the season-long title race.

Both teams sit atop the table on 47 points coming into the final round with Zebras in pole position thanks to their superior goal difference.

Having already met three times this year Olympia comes into the clash with a promising head-to-head record, beating its title rivals on two occasions with the other encounter ending in a draw back in April at Warrior Park. Zebras coach Chris Hey said his team is excited heading into the game.

“The group is fresh, no injuries. The girls are really up to the task. There’s a buzz about the excitement of the last game of the season being the decider,” Hey said.

Olympia coach Alastair Russell shares the sentiment but spoke on the public interest behind such a significant game in women’s football.

“I’m quite excited by the game. I think it’s great for the women. We’ve effectively got a grand final between the two teams where the winner can walk away with the title, I think that’s going to cause a lot of interest.”

Olympia will require a win to take out the title whereas, because of their impressive goal difference, a draw will be enough for Zebras to be crowned champions.

Elsewhere Ulverstone will host South Hobart tomorrow and Kingborough will look to bounce back from last week’s heavy defeat when it meets Clarence at Lightwood Park.

In the penultimate round of NPL action, the Saturday fixtures see Riverside and Olympia Warriors going head to head at Windsor Park and traditional rivals Launceston City and Hobart Zebras will meet at Buckby Landrover Park.

On Sunday, South Hobart welcomes Glenorchy Knights to Darcy Street and Devonport will face Clarence at Wentworth Park.
