Just upgrade Springs

READER Nicholas Sawyer is right in premise, but not conclusion (“Halls Saddle good move,” Letters, September 12). It should not be council’s role to duplicate or compete with a private sector-funded visitor centre, already part of another project; promote a shuttle bus monopoly over other options, by limiting private vehicle access; even give further consideration to a luxury hotel at the Springs, given “significant deficiencies exist (on Pinnacle Rd), especially below The Springs”. The same internal officers’ report is clear: “The Springs remains a key site to access walking and riding tracks.” A cost-effective upgrade to the existing shelter and facilities at the Springs should be enough, not wasting $100,000 of ratepayers’ money on yet another report. and a plan of parking done by council engineers. All of no relevance because they were done after Education Minister Rockliff’s decision on May 31 which was based on information he was given after the initial consultation process. His decision was that the farm was not moving and the school would not be on the farm site. He has reiterated this numerous times but Brighton Council ignores this.

Four years ago relocating was again on the agenda, but after uproar, council rezoned the school farm so it would never be moved. It is an educational farm and totally different to a business farm.

We are lucky to have been given the opportunity for a new high school even though we have an under-used one in our municipality. Council needs to accept Mr Rockliff’s decision and step up and support the minister to deliver a high school of excellence. allowed me to have a convenient excuse to do nothing. Maybe I’m partially to blame. Maybe I should have been like Greta and protested outside parliament every week. The uncomfortable truth is that climate change is my responsibility. It’s happening to me, it’s affecting my life. But it’s also affecting you, your children and grandchildren.

Temperature rise of 1.5C is inevitable. However, if we continue to do nothing it will get much, much worse. Please attend the Global Climate Strike next Friday. We need to act now.
