Tiges hit for slow over rate

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

SALT has been rubbed into Tasmania’s wound after the winless Tigers were deducted one point in the domestic oneday competition for a slow over rate in their 102-run defeat against Western Australia last Wednesday.

It’s been the worst possible start for Tasmania, which remarkably lost to Victoria when the Tigers collapsed in the pursuit of a bonus point, losing its last six wickets for 12 runs, and were dealt with easily by Western Australia.

In accordance with the oneday competition’s playing conditions, half a point is deducted from a team for every over it is behind the expected over rate.

The umpires and match referee for the game at the WACA Ground found the Tigers to be two overs behind the expected rate, meaning Tasmania was penalised a point.

The Tigers have the right to lodge an appeal but coach Adam Griffith said his side won’t be doing so.

“We are just going to take it, it is on us, we had the slow over rate,” Griffith said.

“We’ve discussed how to improve on it going forward.”

Griffith is not too concerned about the loss of the point with his attention focused more on the Tigers winning games.

“I think what is going to be more costly is our collapse against Victoria,” Griffith said.

“We have to make sure we are playing well first and winning games before worrying too much about this situation.

“It is just about controlling the controllables.”

Tasmania plays South Australia tomorrow at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.
