Spirited business win for niche NW distiller

- CAMERON WHITELEY

A DEVONPORT distillery has been named this year’s Telstra Tasmanian Business of the Year.

Award winners were announced at a dinner at Taroona’s Glen Albyn Estate last night.

Southern Wild Distillery produces gins and other spirits and uses locally grown and produced ingredients where possible.

Its products are sold under the Dasher + Fisher brand and celebrate small local growers.

“Southern Wild Distillery’s aim is to bring together and showcase the natural beauty, ingredients and producers of Tasmania and its spirits,’’ co-founder George Burgess said.

Mr Burgess has studied the art of perfumery in France, has spent many years in the distilling industry and also brings expertise in food technology and cheesemaking.

The distillery also took home the emerging and energised award.

Family-owned dental practice, Kingston Beach Dental, won the small and succeeding business award.

The practice was founded in 2007 by Dr Martyn Sweet and provides general, family and cosmetic dental services.

The Derwent Valley-based custom home builder Crusader Homes claimed the medium and making waves award.

The family-owned and operated business saw a 44 per cent increase in overall revenue last year.

Bridgewater Police and Citizens Youth Club were honoured in the social change maker award category.

The PCYC is a not-for-profit community service organisation that provides a safe environment for youth and the community to enhance their future career and personal development.

It offers social and recreational activities, ranging from mentoring and sports to driving lessons.

Telstra Group consumer and small business executive Michael Ackland said award winners showed excellence across six key judging criteria. “The Tasmanian winners are shining examples of businesses doing great things in new and effective ways for their customers,” Mr Ackland said.

The Telstra Business Awards are a longstanding platform that recognises the country’s best businesses, provides expert advice and opens networking opportunities.

Tasmanian award winners will join other state and territory category winners at the national awards in Melbourne next month.
