A day for every dog

- CHANEL KINNIBURGH

HUNDREDS of people and their canine companions gathered in Hobart for the annual Dogs on the Domain event yesterday.

The free event at Soldiers Memorial Oval attracted more than 700 dog lovers between 10am and 1pm.

Following the 1.3km short walk and 2.8km long walk, furry fashionistas strutted their stylish outfits in the fancy dress competition, while others showed off their impressive skills in the best tricks contest.

Finn and Essie Crawford, of South Hobart, had fun in the sun with their adorable 15week-old kelpie-smithfield cross Frankie.

Mum Sarah Crawford said Frankie was already the “heart of the home”.

“They love him so much, except for when he steals their soft toys or begs a little bit too hard at meal times,” she said.

“We came out today to socialise Frankie and to show the kids what other dogs can do.

“The face painting and jumping castle were also hits with the kids and hopefully they’ll sleep all afternoon.”

Hobart City Councillor Bill Harvey yesterday said Dogs on the Domain was all about promoting responsible dog ownership and local services.

“It’s a beautiful day and we have a huge diversity of dogs here, which are clearly well cared for,” he said.

“We should all be making sure no dog ever ends up unloved in a Dogs’ Home. If you’re looking to get a dog, visit the Dogs’ Home and see if you can find your forever friend.”

All the money raised from the barbecue and drinks stalls will be donated to the Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, Hobart Dog Walking Association and Hobart Dog Training Club.
