Sustainable future

READER Alan Robson (Letters, October 11) is correct in suggesting the State and Federal Government need to support an electric vehicle future. Not only do we need charging infrastructure installed, but it would help to increase our clean electricity generation capacity.

In Tasmania we have a wonderful synergy between hydro power and roof top solar. Every watt generated by solar saves water in our dams which can then generate power on cloudy days and at night. Encouraging domestic solar panel installation is important to help support an electric transport future. Electric vehicles are energy efficient and even when run on coal-generated electricity produce less greenhouse gas than petrol vehicles.

The move to electric vehicles will reduce our dependence on imported oil, saving our economy heaps and reducing our greenhouse emissions. We need political

Poor description

I ATTENDED the Extinction Rebellion street protest in Launceston. We occupied a section of a CBD street, planned in advance with the local police and emergency services. About 120 attended, with drumming, music and speeches. Police were professional, respectful and co-operative, as were the XR members. Eight attendees were quietly arrested and removed to the nearby police station. Among the eight were two ministers of religion, an aged gentleman in a wheelchair, a retired IT specialist, a young woman who worked in a local business, a retired GP and a couple who run a successful tourism accommodation business. I’m puzzled when I try to equate these folk with the recent description of XR members given by minister Peter Dutton on ABC radio as “fringe dwellers and anarchists”. THE end of the Trump era is nigh.
