Lakin shines on links to claim championsh­ip

WYNYARD junior Jack Lakin captured back-to-back Southern Country Golf Associatio­n boys’ championsh­ip last week at the Colebrook Golf Club.

The 17-year-old scratch marker carded a one-underpar round of 69 at Colebrook to secure the Golf AustraliaT­asmania Athol Shephard Consistenc­y Trophy event.

Lakin claimed the championsh­ip by two strokes in front of Tasmania Golf Club junior member Dylan Backhouse on one-over-par 71.

North West Bay Golf Club’s Oscar Burrell placed third on four-over-par 74. Tasmanian women’s team member and Riverside Golf Club junior Alexandria Hansen won the correspond­ing girls’ event with a round of 81.

She won the Tammy Hall Consistenc­y Trophy event by seven strokes from Ulverstone’s Tailah Mowat and Royal Hobart’s Mackenzie Thomas, who both fired 88s.

As an added bonus, the best gross and nett winners in both boys’ and girls’ under-15 sections qualified for the 2019 Australian Schools Under-15s Championsh­ip.

Mowat, Thomas, Kingston Beach’s Jordan Stirling and Mowbray’s Oskar Small will compete at the The Coast Golf Club from December 2-5. NEWLY crowned Southern Country junior champion, Alexandria Hansen, teed up to win Sunday’s Tasmanian Business Women’s Open Tournament at Llanherne.

The 16-year-old Riverside Golf Club junior surprised the field to win the event with a three-over-par round of 75.

She finished two strokes clear of her nearest rivals Hallie Meaburn of Royal Hobart and Mackenzie Wilson of Tasmania, both on five-over 77.

The club teams event was won by the Royal Hobart Golf Club, 14 strokes clear of Pittwater Golf Club in second.

Royal Hobart’s Mackenzie Thomas and Daubenton combined for a total of 138 with Jenny Goss and Marion Hagenvoort representi­ng Pittwater. NEW South Wales’ David Bagust from the Port Macquarie Golf Club won the Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championsh­ip last week.

Bagust shot 74, 71 and 71 to finish at even-par 216. Fellow New South Welshman, Lester Peterson from the Bardwell Valley Golf Club, finished two strokes behind Bagust on twoover-par 218.

Prospect Vale Golf Club’s Robbie Berne was the bestplaced Tasmanian in 12th place on 12-over after carding rounds of 72, 79 and 71. AUSTRALIA’S best senior women golfers will tee off at the Nelson Bay Golf Club in NSW next Monday for the Australian Women’s Senior Amateur Championsh­ip.

Among the field of 127 competitor­s are 10 Tasmanians chasing the title in the weeklong event. Key Tasmanian competitor­s include Prospect Vale sisters Tammy Hall and Deidre Panton, and Devonport Golf Club’s Lu Proud.

Other Tasmanians expected to perform well include Prospect Vale Golf Club’s Lindsay French and Devonport’s Helen Plaister.

After 36 holes of stroke play, the leading 16 players qualify for the match play rounds of the championsh­ip with a further eight leading players competing in age flights. Victoria’s Sue Wooster, the defending Australian Women’s Senior Amateur champion, and New Zealand’s Robyn Boniface are favourites for this year’s title.
