Govt says new units to boost housing

- CAMERON WHITELEY

THE start of construction for a new 25-unit complex in Hobart has been heralded by the State Government as part of the next stage of its affordable housing action plan.

The inner-city complex in Goulburn St will feature 19 two-bedroom units and six one-bedroom units, designed to cater for older tenants and those with a disability.

Housing Minister Roger Jaensch yesterday announced Fairbrother Construction as the successful tenderer for the $9 million project, expected to be completed in about 16 months.

Mr Jaensch said the project would create about 60 construction industry jobs and provide an economic boost.

The minister also provided an update on the Government’s Affordable Housing Action Plan 2, saying it was on track to meet targets.

In the quarter to September 30, 142 households were assisted, which Mr Jaensch said meant 1747 households had been assisted through two stages of the Government’s action plan.

Mr Jaensch said a strong pipeline of work was underway with more than 100 houses currently under construction.

Key projects under way included the Huntingfield land release, and the Wirksworth Integrated Aged Care Facility, along with increasing the supply of homes in regional areas.

The quarterly report also references the waiving of the $230 million historic housing debt, with funds to be redirected to programs that improve housing supply across the state.

It also mentions the Government’s purchase of the iconic The Waratah Hotel building, which it will turn into 24 ensuite units and will open next year..

It was revealed last week the Government paid $5.3 million for the Murray St site.

Mr Jaensch said the Government was investing $258 million over eight years into affordable and social housing.
