Boxing’s Big Bash is back

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

IT’S called the Big Bash and there is even a Georgie Bailey on the cards. But while there will be plenty of huge hits, there won’t be a bat or ball in sight.

Back for its eighth edition, the Bridgewater Big Bash boxing event will be held tonight at the Brighton Civic Centre, with some of Tasmania’s best professional and amateur fighters on the card, which could contain up to 15 bouts.

Tasmania’s first ever female professional fighter Krystina “Mousey” Jacobs will headline against Rebecca Radley (NSW).

The Brighton boxer will be hoping to improve on her 3-1 professional record when she takes on an opponent she admits she doesn’t know a lot about. “She has had about 30 Muay Thai fights and two boxing fights so she is pretty experienced,” Jacobs said. “I’ve been running, training really hard and sparring a lot.

“I’m doing a lot more running since my last fight — I think I’ll be a lot fitter than I’ve ever been.”

The card will also include arguably Tasmania’s best amateur female boxer, Georgie Bailey from the Huon Valley Boxing Club.

Bailey, who has fought Jacobs during her amateur days, is looking forward to fighting someone else and said she will have her own professional bout one day.

“I’m happy with the amateurs at the moment, I will probably have at least one professional fight in the future,” Bailey said. “I want one pro fight before I retire for sure. “I’ve fought at three or four of these events and normally we have to fight each other, so it will be good to be on the card and not have to fight Mousey.”
