Orford kicks off season with win

ORFORD started the Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Division One pennant in style playing at home and beating Sorell in the first round of the season on Thursday.

The game was close until the lunch break but as Orford’s synthetic green sped up Sorell had difficulty in adjusting and Orford won on all rinks by 15 shots. Sally Giblin trailed Faye Gardner by four shots at the lunch break but with Audrey Baker leading well, Giblin got the upper hand and went on to win by nine shots.

Roslyn Cowle and Shirley Hay were level at the break before Cowle moved away winning by five shots. Pauline Sage defeated Janet Cowen by one shot. Cowen’s third, Monica Lovell, was outstandin­g all day. Sage picked up the kitty to score six shots on the 11th end and beat Cowen by one shot.

Claremont recorded a sixshot win over Rosny Park. Maree Morgan set up the win for Claremont defeating Gaylene Ridgeway by nine shots. Liz Sweeney led well for Jan McPherson, who scored four shots on the final end to beat Ailsa Milburn by two shots.

Rosny Park won on the other rink with Jenny Suttie defeating Joy Voss despite the efforts of Claremont recruit Di Peck who was outstandin­g all day. Suttie led by 11 shots after 17 ends and had to fight off a spirited comeback from Voss to win by five shots.

Sandy Bay had a 63-shot win over Kingboroug­h. With Peri Buckley on fire, Chris Dowleasily defeated Vicki Bannister by 25 shots. Gail Price led well for Yvonne Buckley, who comfortabl­y beat Leonie Price by 20 shots.

Robyn Leggett was too strong for Greta Murray. Leggett’s rink played some skilful shots winning by 18.

Dover RSL travelled to Brighton, winning by 23 shots. Sheryl Phillips defeated Sue Grant by 19 shots. Carol Bannister had a convincing 14-shot win over Noeline Fehlberg. Val Lukasec was Brighton’s only winner defeating Sharon Delaney by 10 shots.

Howrah was too good for Buckingham winning by 25 shots. Rosie Geeves scored 15 shots on the first four ends against Jeannette Lane to set up the win, eventually winning by 18 shots.
