PRESS freedom, along with a responsibi­lity to report fairly and honestly, is clearly an important requiremen­t to safeguard our democracy. However, freedom of the press is not sufficient by itself. We see in the US, particular­ly on the right, corruption of politician­s by wealthy corporatio­ns and individual­s. To stop this here I think we need a federal anti-corruption watchdog with wide investigat­ive powers and real teeth. We need reform of political parties and their funding model. As citizens we need a Bill of Rights to prevent abuses of power against us.

Most importantl­y we need everyone to receive a good education. Education is critical, opening the door to better jobs and a more fulfilling life, and equipping us to detect false narratives from opinion media and politician­s. Our democracy is not perfect, needs improvemen­t, but it is better than anything else yet devised. A free and responsibl­e press is important in keeping government­s accountabl­e and safeguardi­ng our way of life. are or are not being made for our country. Government­s and politician­s forget it is us constituen­ts, the taxpayer mums, dads and senior citizens that decide their political fates. We live in a democratic society that should not be governed in secrecy. We are slowly becoming more like the Chinese government each day. Keep up the good fight for the people, the Mercury and your journalist­s, you have my full support. at the age of 2½, she wandered onto the train line and was killed.
