WISE GUYS’ TITLE QUEST

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

AGE is not an issue for these Tasmanian cricketers preparing for the upcoming veteran cricket events across the country in November. Patrick Henry (left) and Kelvyn Anderson will join over50s, 60s and 70s all having their national championships. Tasmania will be hosting the England over60s side for the first time.

THERE are no worries about age for the Tasmanian cricketers preparing for the upcoming veteran cricket events across the country in November.

Next month will be packed with veteran cricket, with the over-50s, 60s and 70s all having their national championships, followed by the over-60s Grey Ashes series against England.

Six teams from the state will compete across the championships and Tasmania will host the England over-60s side for the first time when they travel to the Apple Isle for two practice games against the Tasmanian over-60s team.

Three Tasmanians will feature in the Australian side for the Grey Ashes with Pat Henry, 62, Emmanuel Benjamin, 64, and Glenn Richardson, 63, all being selected in the 14-man squad.

Henry, who will likely open the bowling for Australia, will take time away from playing for the Marquis Tigers in the Southern Cricket Association to represent his country.

“I’m proud to play for my country in any capacity,” Henry said. “We all work hard and put in the practise, it’s still good-quality cricket.

“It’s not old men walking around, we still run hard between the wickets and put in effort when we are playing.”

Having travelled to England this year and New Zealand previously as a part of the Australian team, Henry said it’s an easy decision to continue to play the game he loves.

“The camaraderie is a big thing, everyone gets along well,” he said.

“Why wouldn’t you want to travel the world and play cricket?”
