Pressure grows over rodeo horror at show

Brightside Farm Sanctuary founder Emma Haswell was sent the footage from onlooker Lili Koch. One video showed the bull after it broke its leg while another was of the bull being let into the arena. Both can be viewed on the Mercury website.

“In this video you can see how animals become injured,” Ms Haswell said.

“They are goaded and tormented into a frenzy before being let out of the chute.

“They are full of fear and frustratio­n and the desire to escape. They feel under attack and they feel in danger.”

Independen­t MP Andrew Wilkie said: “The dreadful suffering of a young bull at the Royal Hobart Show is further compelling evidence that rodeos should be banned in Tasmania.” frightened and that in itself is a bad animal welfare state.

“It’s good they had a vet there and dealt with it very quickly and I’m impressed, but … are we living in a world now where it is required a vet put down an animal every now and then for our entertainm­ent?”

MC Rodeo Company owner Mick Wyllie said the company will do its own review into the incident.

“Once our report is done, if there’s anything that needs adjusting, all that will be actioned over the course of the Dr Andrew Byrne said the size of the bull made it questionab­le whether it should have been used in the rodeo.

“I was quite shocked at how small it was,” Dr Byrne said.

But Dr Byrne said the RSPCA does not condone rodeos no matter the size of the bulls being used.

“It [the incident] just adds to the pile of informatio­n that we have that rodeos aren’t really there for the animals,” Dr Byrne said.

“A rodeo relies on these animals being super, super MORE graphic footage has been shared by an onlooker who watched as a bull broke its leg at the Royal Hobart Show last week.

The video showed the small bull in the event’s rodeo bucking its rider off and then jumping around franticall­y with a broken left hind leg.

It has been confirmed by the rodeo organisers that the bull was euthanised shortly after the incident occurred.
