IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY IN THE LIFE OF RILEY

- Sports editor BRETT STUBBS

ON the same day he injured a teammate in the practice nets, Tasmanian fast bowler Riley Meredith was yesterday selected to play for Australia A. Rated by spin legend Shane Warne as a must for Australian short-form cricket,

Meredith will take on the touring Pakistan team at Perth Stadium in a three-day game starting November 11.

TIGERS opener Jordan Silk can attest to the pace of Riley Meredith that has seen the quick selected in the Australia A squad to take on Pakistan.

Silk will miss the next month, starting with the Tigers’ first home shield game against Victoria starting tomorrow, after having his forearm broken by a Meredith thunderbolt in the nets.

It was mixed day for the 23year-old speedster who was announced as part of the team about the same time he was injuring his teammate.

But there is no doubting his raw pace has been identified by national selectors.

It is the first time he has been selected for an Australian squad at any level or age group.

He has started the season in fine form, coming off his first shield five-wicket haul (including Steve Smith) against a starstudded NSW team.

“I haven’t really done anything too differently, I’ve just got more confidence in what I do and stuck to that,” Meredith said. “I wasn’t all that quick in the juniors, it probably wasn’t until the under-19s that I picked up a bit of pace and just kept going with it.”

Spin legend Shane Warne has been so impressed by what he’s seen of Meredith that he has called for his selection in the national senior team for the T20 format at least.

“I don’t get hung up on it too much, I just take it as a compliment,” Meredith said.

While becoming more comfortable at Shield level, there is no doubt bowling to Smith was a step up. “It is daunting bowling to Steve Smith more than anyone,” he said. “It just feels so different to any other batsman I’ve bowled to before.”
